About the She Breathes Fire Universe:

She Breathes Fire dismantles patriarchal systems and toxic gender binaries by recontextualizing the Hero’s Journey through a feminist lens. I have created a fantasy world of my own imagination that explores the heroine’s journey throughout many ages, characters and landscapes. The concept for the project was created while I attended the ArtHouse Holland residency in the Netherlands in October 2022. The project offers its own folkloric tale seen through the eyes of women and provides an alternative history that is in stark comparison to the heroism society has internalized.

She Breathes Fire takes place in the fantasy world of Shey. The world is occupied by Saeya, a race of gender-expansive women who are the keepers of the Earth. Saeya live exceedingly long lives and have magical powers based on their connection to the land. In its full iteration, She Breathes Fire will be a three-part Opera Cycle that recounts the entire history of Saeya along with many different pieces written for a vast array of ensembles and genres.
